Today we're testing a viral video that claims dipping sea shells in vinegar over night will turn them to glass. We're testing that out along with a few other acids.

It can not convert to glass coz glass is made of silica and shells are made of CaCO3

You should take 1 shell and put it in mixture of all 4 liquids

If you keep using the same acid the pH will keep going towards 7. Should be using fresh acid to get the most accurate results. It's keeps creating calcium nitrate/sulfate/chloride (the conjugate base), CO2(g) and H2O.

Also it's chemically impossible to turn seashells (calcium carbonate) into glass (silicon dioxide).

Hmmm, interesting. Maybe coating the shells with silicon dioxide and sodium. Under precise temperature, pressure, and time, could tranmutate the calcium carbonate into silicon dioxide? Then sweat the impurites with heat without compromising the structure?

You can use shells to make cement. Bake them in a fire, then pour water on them. Cool reaction, gets hot.

The other material, chitin, is less enduring and falls apart. I'm appalled at the state of people's knowledge of general physics, biology, and chemistry. I am 56 and am grateful for having the solid background that so few kids get these days. Don't get me wrong. It's great to experiment and see what happens, but, knowing your basic facts can go a long way to help save time and material.
